The importance of setting sail on time is vital as fines from ports can be extortionate – and this is something ERIKS really does understands. The Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service vessel RMAS Salmaid was due to depart for Newcastle, from Grimsby, when the motor generator supplying the ships main winch began to fail.

RMAS Salmaid

Excessive vibration and noise was coming from the unit –which consisted of a 124Kw DC generator, a 124Kw A.C drive motor and a 24/13.5Kw DC generator.

Without this system being operational, a large buoy could not be lowered and raised, making the vessel unfit to carry out its service. But not to worry, ERIKS was on-hand to source and solve the issue in the fragile time frame.

Phase 2

Through EMS Plymouth, the Ministry of Defence ordered a unit overhaul, taking advantage of ERIKS’ UK wide branch network and contacting the Grimsby division.

That same day, a skilled team of ERIKS engineers arrived at the docks and found that the 124Kw DC generator was emitting the noise and set up a schedule to replace the bearings and coupling rubber, but it quickly became quickly apparent that the damage was far worse than anticipated.

As a result, the A.C. rotor core pack had to be completely removed. The end shield also had to be removed to gain vital access and replace the drive end bearing assembly. Once the unit arrived at EMS, it was dismantled, the damage was fully assessed and measured. The commutators on both armatures were skimmed, and new roller bearings sourced, and fitted, to the shaft before reassembly and testing.

Phase 3

Within a couple of days, the complete generator set was run tested, and the single D.C generator was split and returned for dispatch where it was successfully refitted.

This task was co-ordinated by ERIKS’ specialist Marine Division, who supply to vessels of all sizes. Services available include mechanical engineering, electrical work and a worldwide product supply network.
