It’s often said that, if a bearing can find a way to fail, it will, and there’s three main ways it tries – so let’s take a closer look.

1. 90% of bearing failures are caused by contamination. Mounting a seal directly onto the shaft causes contamination, allowing it to penetrate the bearing.
2. In an attempt to reduce contamination, operators often over-lubricate the units, until the grease purges. This leads to the bearing being overheated, resulting in wear and finally failure.
3. Most split-block housed units require time-consuming mounting, adjusting for float, and measuring the internal clearance of the bearing. In turn, this means there are several opportunities for human error, which will inevitably lead to failure.

From installation to downtime and service life, the Timken solid-block housed unit boasts a major improvement. The standard steel unit is delivered completely sealed, so the bearing is never exposed to the elements or any contamination. Other design features include a standard extended inner ring and three primary seals. Secondary seal options are also available in steel, polyurethane and others on request.

Lubricated to perfection

Under- and over-lubrication can cause problems for bearings, but the Timken solution avoids both by being pre-lubricated to the exact amount. Re-lubrication is minimal, and it’s impossible to over-lubricate thanks to its specially designed seals. Pre-lubrication even makes installation quicker, as there’s no need to pack the housing with grease as part of the process.
