For people who aren’t familiar with crimping, it’s the process of joining two or more pieces of metal by deforming either or both elements so that they hold each other securely. But for those who know their hoses, you’ll understand that it’s a vital component of any hose assembly.

hose crimping

Let us tell you, there’s a lot that can go wrong. So here’s some of the common errors – they might sound obvious, but they are common mistakes for a reason.

  • Using the wrong crimper
  • Not lining up your hose correctly
  • Using the incorrect crimp or fitting
  • Under crimping

With these simple problems in mind, it’s easy to see that understanding the best practices of crimping is crucial to ensuring that you avoid unnecessary downtime or serious risk of injury - and let’s not forget costly damage and environmental issues.

So this is what you’ll need to do for the best crimp, every time:

  • Gather all the required tools
  • Mark insertion depth
  • Push hose into coupling to marked depth
  • Choose correct dies and insert into die holder
  • Set machine crimp setting via crimp data sheet
  • Insert hose and fittings into machine dies
  • Operated pump until indicator light illuminates
  • Release pressure until die opens and assembly is released
  • Visually inspect for defects and measure crimp diameter against data sheet

Looking for a new crimper? Well, Gates manufactures a range of high-quality crimpers that are guaranteed to improve the operational efficiency of your hose assemblies, whilst also significantly increasing service life.

In addition, they have the eCrimpDatabase where you can find the most up-to-date and valid specifications for their hose assemblies, providing instructions, diameter, maintenance and troubleshooting information.
